Mixing a Metal Track

Hi all,

My questions quite simple but needs a slightly long winded answer.

I've recorded the guitars and bass for a metal track and i was wondering how to get a decent sond from the overall track. by that i mean, how to use certain feautres.

For example, what are the main processes i will need to use and what do they do to the track. I know what sound im looking for (aim for something like killswitch engage, obviously not gonna get near that but its a heading point) i just dont know where to start in getting that sound.

Recording Rap Vocals - SM 58 - into 1/8" ?

I am beginning to record rap vocals.  I have a shure sm58 and I plug it into an older Tascam 4 track, then use the line out stereo to 1/8" In my laptop sound card.  Would i be better off puchasing a shure x2u so I can go straight to USB and skip my sound card?  I get reletively decent sounds through the tascam... I just want to get the most out of my sm58.  Thanks

Making audio travel from right to left

I just want to know... how can we make sound or AUDIO travel from left to right stereo... or right to left stereo... This is an added effect you can observe with major recordings.... Example A guitar tune travels from your left ear to right ear while you are listening to it through your headphones ?

Presonus Firestudio Project and ASIO4ALL Buffer Size in Pro Tools 10.

Since I've upgraded to Pro Tools 10, I seem to be having a problem with the hardware buffer sizes in Pro Tools along with the ASIO4ALL driver. If I set a buffer size in Pro Tools to say, 1024 samples, ASIO4ALL won't match this buffer size and instead set itself to 512 samples. The buffer size in the Presonus Universal Control for my Firestudio Project won't change at all either. In other words, the buffer sizes across Pro Tools, ASIO4ALL and the Presonus Universal Control, are all different and not matching the same buffer size. Things were fine in Pro Tools 9, and this has only occured since upgrading to Pro Tools 10. I've tried downgrading to Pro Tools 9, but this is still happening. Has anyone else had this issue?

Best mix signal out of a Mackie 32:8 analog desk?

I've been in the habit of routing my mix back into the computer via the subgroup outs on my Mackie desk, but wonder if there's any benefit in using the main (XLR) balanced outs instead? Any help / advice on this gratefully received.

Has anyone tried out the Shure KSM27 on overheads?

I'm looking to buy some new overhead mics as my small diaphragm condensers don't give me the fatness of the kit that I'd like. As much as I'd love to buy a couple of KSM32s, they're just way out of my price range and it seemed that the KSM27s were a nice alternative.

Has anyone used the KSM27 on overheads? I've read other forums which really just go on about it being used on vocals or acoustic guitar.

Recording Clarity

Hi All -

I have a somewhat simple question about recording instruments in a DAW.I use very good Mics to record with and I record drums, guitar, bass, etc.Lately, my recordings have been coming out with horrible clarity.See, you can hear things that were recorded, but, using EQ doesn't help.EQ just adjusts the frequencies within the recordings.  What I need is to be able to bring resolution and clarity to recordings.  Would an Exciter work? Maybe like, a BBE Sonic Maximizer or Aphex Aural Exciter?A lot of times my drum recordings sound kind of "muffled".  I just need them to sound nice and CLEAR.  If anyone knows how to fix that, please help - THANKS!Happy Holidays and New Year :)

Who influences you?

We're all influenced by someone in particular for whatever reason, so who has been your spark of inspiration to mix and record?

Mine would be Fredrik Nordstrom (Arch Enemy, Dimmu Borgir, etc)

Jon Merchant (Barbra Streissand, BeeGees, etc)

They both have very natural but polished productions that are clean and transparent and pleasing to the ear.

Recording an instructor' while filming him from a distance

OK, so here's my problem: I snuck myself into our Ninjutsu club's sporting event as the "photographer" - I have to video the event using my consumer Canon HF10 camcorder, and I'll have to produce a DVD of the event.

Now, I have also videoed the previous event, and have detected a problem with recording the instructor's speech: The process is that the instructor demonstrates a technique, and then everyone practices the technique. The instructor then walks around, correcting mistakes. During the demos there is little problem: Everyone is (mostly) quite and the instructor wears a mike (connected to a little box worn at belt level) transmitting to an amplifying system (at least he did during the last event). So there’s no problem there. However, when the instructor moves around he turns off the mike (because obviously he needn’t be heard all across the mat). It’s tough to run after him with the camera and the tripod, because people are spread all over the mat. Moreover, when he says the interesting things, people gather around him listening (and speaking). Also people around **me** go on training, which may get quite noisy. So I can't get a clear recording of the instructor and we miss the best parts, the corrections people could really learn from.

**So, what I need is some way to capture what he’s saying while he's far from the camera**. Any suggestions?

Points to consider:

  1. This is Ninjutsu, so the instructor is moving around and is active, especially when doing the class demos. However, as he’s the one doing the throws etc., and considering he’s already “wired” to the amplifying system’s mike, he’s not overly active.
  2. It’s a hobby. I’m not going to be paid – so expenses should be not too high.
  3. The result should be merged as a soundtrack to the video.
  4. The camera has no genlock.
  5. I’m much more “into” it than the instructor is. It’s a little like the cat and the bell, so it needs to be as little a hassle as possible. Thanks!

How to insert intro and outro to a disc using a cd recorder or burner
I am trying to make a cd recording using a Tascam recorder connected to my soundboard. At the same time, I need to add an intro clip and an outro clip to the cd recording. I want to stay away from software and use the faster cd recorder. Is there a way to add the clips to the disc first, then record my content (i.e. CD-RW)? Any suggestions?

Transients

Hey Guys-  I have a somewhat simple question:

What is a Transient?  I'm not referring to a homeless guy  :)

I heard this term when speaking about recording drums, guitar, etc, but never knew what the term referred to.If anyone can answer in very simple terms, that would be cool!

Thanks much !

low recording level with sidetone
Loaded ProTools 8.0 into a laptop for a mobile recording unit. Using an M-Audio MobilPre USB as an A/D converter. USB into the converter, connected to the laptop. Plugged the dongle that came with the ProTools into another available USB port on the laptop. It records guitar or keyboard, but only if the volume control for the input on the A/D converter is maxxed, which is accompanied by a corresponding increase in b ackground hum that sounds like a 60Hz sidetone. The ProTools works fine on my desk top unit through an M-Audio 2696 interface. I got the MobilePre second hand from someone who was moving-could the age of that unit be the problem?

XLR with TRS Adapter

Hi and thanks in advance. If I connect a TRS adapter to an xlr cable will the path remain balanced and will I degrade the path in anyway as opposed to buying a "wired" xlr one end TRS on the other end
