REVIEWS...

"...."With only the quiet power of Bill Frisell's guitar providing a backdrop for the most part, Donald Rubinstein has created an awesome display of the hold that music can have, Rubinstein's Iyrics are decidedly poetic, yet these are songs in a more traditional sense than a poetry reading might imply, although the approach is similar to a poet shining his lonely spotlight back on his audience for them to peer inside of themselves, I've had this playing over and over for many months and it changes with me, like the best expressions do, "Time Again" is able to be majestic and deeply personal, displaying a solitary reflection that embraces humanity, The music has free, improvisational feel throughout that is more blues than anything else, which I believe establishes a foundation for all the varied emotions it speaks so beautifully. Frisell's guitar is the perfect companion throughout, in fact your never quite sure if it's the guitar or the vocalist who's guiding you here, the match is that solid. A treasure." Bryan Baker, Gajoob- October, 1998.... "Donald Rubinstein's "Time Again" collects 12 beatnik-folk songs produced by jazzy avant-gardists, Bill Frisell and Wayne Horvitz..,Quietly compelling, playing like the after hours musing of a (much) tripper John Hiatt," --Keven McAlester, The New Times, Los Angeles.... "Time Again is only Rubinstein's voice and acoustic piano and (Bill Frisell's) guitar. The music from this album had a spoken word/slow jazz/bluely feel that I really liked. Rubinstein's voice sounds a little like Henry Rollins; musically, though, Rubinstein doesn't have the metal/grunge influences. The Iyrics to the songs really catch your attention and he does a good job of bringing them out in the music. This is one of those albums that see regular duty in my CD player. Not a common fate among the CD's that indie musicians send me." Jacob Johnston http://www.DubiousPub.com/DTL/Current/index.html.... "TIME AGAIN, WHAT A WONDERFUL CD!"
